Spruces like gentle slopes or hilly terrain with good drainage but Norway spruce can tolerate periodically waterlogged soils near creeks or swamps. Keep weeds down around the tree for at least the first year and water in well after planting until established. They will need little additional watering or fertiliser but will grow faster if kept moist throughout the year. Norway spruce are slow growers to start but become very vigorous growers once established. Avoid fertilising in the first few months after planting as this can burn seedlings. Plant out directly in the field in cool conditions or pot up and grow on for a year to get your trees ahead of the weeds and give them time to adapt to your climate. The norway spruce is also a great host tree for saffron milk caps, slippery jacks, grey knights, chantarelles and a range of other edible fungi. Prefers slightly acidic soil pH 5.0 - 6.5 but will tolerate neutral to lightly alkaline soils. Note this species requires at least some frost each year to grow healthily. The Norway spruce is frost tolerant down to -40 degrees Celsius or more, but will grow well in warmer climates with only light frosts in winter. The tree likes a well drained soil however will tolerate heavier clays and silts well, even putting up with periodic waterlogging or drought. This variety is a hardy, fast growing, flood and drought tolerant spruce tree which grows relatively quickly into a stately landscape feature, dense windbreak or shapely Christmas tree.
